Captain Henry P. Smith's mess, Company D of the 93rd New York Volunteers, was photographed in camp at Bealton, Virginia, in August 1863. Timothy H. O'Sullivan made the picture as a stereograph, using two glass negatives exposed side by side so that viewers could see the scene in depth through a stereo viewer. That summer the Army of the Potomac was camped across northern Virginia after the Gettysburg campaign, and quiet views of daily camp life like this one were among the scenes photographers recorded for people at home.
