Officers of the 93rd New York Volunteers gathered near Bealton, Virginia, in September 1863, and the regimental staff posed for the camera in the Piedmont countryside of Fauquier County. The glass negative is a stereograph, made as a pair of images for viewing through a stereoscope, and it uses the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate on the spot. Bealton lay along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, and the Army of the Potomac was encamped in that area during the autumn campaigns of 1863. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, whose work from the same region is well known, though the attribution has since been revised.
