Officers of Company E, 93rd New York Volunteers, gathered at their mess in camp near Bealton, Virginia, in August 1863, according to the caption on the original negative sleeve. Bealton, a station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in Fauquier County, was a Union camping area in the months after the Gettysburg campaign, when the Army of the Potomac rested and resupplied. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain, and it survives as a wet collodion glass negative.
