This glass negative records a company of the 93rd New York Infantry, identified by its written caption as Company K, photographed at Bealton, Virginia, in August 1863. Bealton, a station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in Fauquier County, was a camp area for the Army of the Potomac that summer, so the picture shows a unit in the field during a lull between campaigns. The wet collodion process, used widely in the early 1860s, required quick exposures and fragile glass plates, which is part of why such images are valued today. A later annotation on the glass, dated 1865, suggests the plate passed through military hands after the war. The negative was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been questioned.
