The subject here is Company K of the 93rd New York Infantry, a unit nicknamed the Morgan Rifles, photographed at Bealton, Virginia, in August 1863. That summer the Army of the Potomac was resting and reorganizing in Fauquier County after the Gettysburg campaign, and camps like this one were common across the region. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate on the spot. The collection's records note that the image was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
