Officers of the 80th New York Infantry, also listed under the older militia designation of the 20th Regiment and as the Alston Guard, posed at Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863. By then the town lay among the Army of the Potomac's camps following the Gettysburg campaign, and photographers working in the area often made group portraits of officers. The picture is a glass negative made by the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet. The record notes that it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the well-known Civil War photographer.
