Dr. Charles K. Irwin of the 72nd New York Infantry stands in front of a canvas tent in this September 1863 view made near Culpeper, Virginia. His regiment belonged to the Excelsior Brigade, a unit drawn largely from New York volunteers and attached to the Army of the Potomac. That autumn Culpeper was a large Union encampment, and the army's presence there drew many photographers to the lines. The picture survives as a stereograph pair, two glass plates meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, and it was once credited to Alexander Gardner.
