In September 1863, Culpeper, Virginia, was a Union camp and supply center, and this glass negative shows Col. William R. Brewster of the 73rd New York Infantry posed with his staff. The sleeve calls him General Brewster, a reminder that wartime titles were often recorded loosely. The 73rd was raised in New York City, which gives the picture a local connection. The wet collodion process used here required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate quickly, often in a portable darkroom. The negative was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now considered uncertain.
