Colonel William R. Brewster, commander of the 73d New York Infantry, sits for this September 1863 portrait made at Culpeper, Virginia, a town that served as a major Union staging ground that year. The glass negative is a wet collodion plate, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate on the spot, so field portraits like this one were made with considerable effort. The record credits the image to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution was formerly assigned to this photographer and is recorded in the source caption books. The 73d New York was one of the New York City regiments serving in the Army of the Potomac, which makes the portrait a useful link between the city and the war in Virginia.
