The lettering on these cars names the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad and the New York to St. Louis run of the Southwestern Limited, a named long-distance train of the period. The Library of Congress dates the glass negative to about 1890, but the title was devised by cataloguers, so the date is approximate. Its large format, about 18 by 22 inches, captured fine detail in the cars, and the railroad may have commissioned it to show off its equipment.
