Park Row, near City Hall Park at the foot of Manhattan, was once the center of New York's newspaper trade, and this view captures the cluster of papers and office buildings that gave the street its name. Detroit Publishing Company made it around 1900 as one of its large-format views of American cities, and the surviving glass negatives record the street at a time when newspapers were among the city's most visible businesses. The pair of negatives, nearly identical, reflects the company's practice of making duplicates for sale, and the image is useful for seeing how the district looked before the skyline grew much taller.
