Between Fourth and Fifth Streets in Richmond, this stereograph pair shows the quarters of correspondents for New York newspapers, who followed Union forces into the Confederate capital after its fall in early April 1865. Their dispatches carried news of the occupation, the damaged city, and the surrender to readers in the North. James F. Gibson, who had worked with Alexander Gardner, made the photograph, and its two halves were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The scene is a reminder that the war was also reported in print, and that the people writing about it were part of the story.
