Soldiers of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery are shown loading a 24-pounder siege gun at Arlington, Virginia, in 1862. The two glass plates form a stereograph pair, so the scene was meant to be seen through a stereo viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Heavy guns like this were mounted in the ring of fortifications that protected Washington, and the caption credits the battery to General Ingalls. The photographer, James F. Gibson, worked with wet collodion, a process that required the glass to be coated and exposed before it dried.
