The officers of Companies K and L of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, posed at Fort C.F. Smith in Arlington, Virginia, in August 1865, make a rare record of a single unit in its final months. Fort C.F. Smith was one of the earthworks ringing Washington, built on the Virginia heights above the Potomac to guard the approaches to the capital. By that summer the war had ended and garrison units were winding down. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and careful handling. The record once credited Alexander Gardner with the photograph, but that attribution is no longer assumed.
