This stereograph shows the winter quarters of the 13th New York Heavy Artillery near Petersburg, Virginia, with the two glass plates forming the left and right halves of a pair meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The record gives 1861 as the date, but Petersburg became a central Union objective during the siege of 1864 and 1865, so the date may be uncertain. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made wet collodion negatives of Union camps and soldiers, and his plates give a close look at how heavy artillery units lived between campaigns.
