Officers of the 50th New York Engineers posed in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in July 1864, during the siege that began that June. The regiment's engineers spent their time building the trenches, bridges, and fortifications the Union army relied on around the city, so the group portrait places the men who did that work in front of the ground they were shaping. David B. Woodbury made the picture on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried, which made field portraits like this one a demanding undertaking.
