The chapel in this view was built by men of the 50th New York Engineers, a unit whose work was construction rather than combat, so the structure reflects the daily labor of soldiers camped outside Petersburg. Timothy H. O'Sullivan photographed it in 1865, as the nine-month siege was drawing to a close. The picture is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives exposed as a pair, so that viewed through a stereoscope the small building appears to stand with depth. Its wet collodion glass plates are typical of the period's field photography, and the scene offers a glimpse of how Union troops made themselves at home in the siege lines.
