A canvas-covered pontoon wagon of the 50th New York Engineers, photographed at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in March 1864, offers a close look at the equipment army engineers used to throw temporary bridges across rivers. Pontoon wagons carried the folding boats and fittings for that work, and the canvas covers hint at how exposed these crews were to winter weather. Rappahannock Station had already seen river crossings and fighting in 1862 and 1863. The image is a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it belongs to the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection.
