Pontoon builders of the 50th New York Engineers made this camp near Rappahannock Station, Virginia, their base in 1864 as the Army of the Potomac campaigned across northern Virginia. The regiment's work was less glamorous than the battle lines it supported: its men laid and repaired the bridges and river crossings that let infantry, artillery and supply wagons move. The Rappahannock crossing had seen fighting in late 1863, so the ground was marked by earlier action and the rebuilding that followed. The War Photograph and Exhibition Company published the view, which shows how Union engineers lived between campaigns.
