Officers of the 50th New York Engineers gathered at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in March 1864, a few months after Union and Confederate forces fought over the crossing in November 1863. The 50th was a New York engineer regiment that built and repaired the bridges and roads the Army of the Potomac relied on, so the men pictured were part of the work that kept the army supplied and moving. David B. Woodbury made the image on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. That method makes the picture a useful record of a winter camp and of the officers who ran it.
