Officers' quarters of the 50th New York Engineers at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, appear in this second view of the camp, made in 1864. The regiment, raised in New York, spent much of the war building and repairing pontoon bridges and fortifications for the Army of the Potomac, and the Rappahannock crossing was an important link in those campaigns. Winter and semi-permanent encampments like this one were typically built from logs, boards and canvas, offering a glimpse of how engineer units lived between periods of heavy fighting. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposures and careful handling in the field.
