Here the subject is the quarters of field and staff officers of the 50th New York Engineers at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in 1864, rather than the fighting itself. The regiment was an engineering unit whose soldiers built and repaired bridges, roads and fortifications, skills that helped Union armies cross and hold the Rappahannock River. Made on a wet collodion glass negative, the photograph records how the army housed its senior men during the long stretches between campaigns, when camp building and maintenance took up much of the work.
