Winter quarters at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, are the setting here, where the 50th New York Engineers camped during the winter of 1863 to 1864. The Union army had fought for this river crossing that autumn, and engineer regiments like this one were responsible for the bridges and fortifications that supported the army along the Rappahannock. The image was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates quickly, often with a portable darkroom nearby. Look for the orderly rows of huts and tents, which show how an army laid out a camp when it expected to stay for months.
