Few pictures from the war show the engineering behind army movements as plainly as this one. It records a pontoon wagon of the 50th New York Engineers at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, a river crossing that changed hands during the fighting of 1863. Wagons like this carried the sections of a portable boat bridge, which engineers could assemble quickly so infantry and supply trains could cross a river the enemy might otherwise hold. The picture dates to 1864 and was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate before it dried.
