At Rappahannock Station in Virginia, a river crossing that changed hands several times during the war, a sutler's hut and a stockade belonging to the 50th New York Engineers stand in view. The engineers, a unit trained to build bridges and fortifications, were in the area in 1864, when the Union army held the line along the river. Sutlers were civilian merchants licensed to sell food, tobacco, paper and other goods to soldiers, so their huts were a familiar sight in any long encampment, and this glass negative preserves the wooden structures in fine detail.
