Few pictures show the working gear of Civil War engineers as directly as this view of a canvas-covered pontoon boat at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. The boat belonged to the 50th New York Engineers, a unit that built and maintained the floating bridges the Army of the Potomac relied on to cross rivers. Rappahannock Station had been the scene of a Union crossing and clash in November 1863, and the river remained a key crossing point through the following year. The wet collodion glass negative used to make the picture was the standard method of the period, and its date of 1864 places the image during the army's long campaigning in northern Virginia.
