Brandy Station, Virginia, was the site of a major cavalry clash in June 1863, but this April 1864 stereograph shows a quieter side of the place: the tents of the 50th New York Engineers, photographed from the northwest. The negative sleeve credits T. H. O'Sullivan, who made many camp and field views for the Army of the Potomac. Because it is a stereo pair, the two glass plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gives the rows of tents a sense of depth. Engineer regiments built roads, bridges and fortifications that kept the army supplied and moving, so the camp records the everyday work behind the campaigns of 1864.
