Here a church and a camp of the 50th New York Engineers stand together in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in 1862. The regiment was a New York unit whose men built and repaired the bridges, roads, and earthworks that Union armies relied on, so the scene shows engineers settled into a camp near a town. The picture is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate on the spot. David B. Woodbury, who photographed Union army life during the war, made the image. He died in 1866.
