This photograph records Major G. of the 50th New York Engineers, photographed in the countryside around Petersburg, Virginia, in 1865. By then the city had been under siege for nearly ten months, and the armies around it depended on engineer regiments like the 50th to build roads, corduroy causeways, and pontoon bridges across the marshy ground and rivers of the region. The image was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes. It was taken by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it belongs to a larger body of Civil War glass negatives that documents the war's officers and sites.
