Soldiers of the 50th New York Engineers built this log church at Poplar Grove, Virginia, a rare case of a wartime unit raising a place of worship in the middle of a campaign. The regiment spent much of the war constructing roads, bridges, and fortifications, and the area southwest of Petersburg, where the armies fought through 1864 and into 1865, was dense with such work. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative from 1865, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose the plate before it dried. Images like this show how the siege reshaped rural communities around Petersburg, not only the front lines.
