Few pictures from the Petersburg siege turn the camera toward supply rather than combat, which makes this view of the commissary department of the 50th New York Engineers unusual. The regiment, raised in New York, spent much of 1864 in Virginia building and repairing the earthworks and bridges that held the Union lines around Petersburg, and the men who fed and supplied them worked close behind those lines. The image was made with a wet collodion glass negative, the standard process of the period, which required photographers to coat and expose plates quickly in the field. It is a useful reminder that a siege depended as much on stores and provisions as on the fighting.
