This photograph shows officers of the 69th New York State Militia, a regiment raised in New York City, posed at Fort Corcoran in Virginia in 1861. The fort was an earthwork built by Union troops on high ground in Arlington County, and it was named for Col. Michael Corcoran, the 69th's commander, whose Irish-American regiment was among the first New York units to cross into Virginia after the Union army advanced in the spring of 1861. The print was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold Civil War photographs widely to the public, so it offers a view of the early war as it was presented to people at home.
