This photograph shows the 7th New York State Militia at Camp Cameron, a training ground on the northwestern edge of Washington, D.C., in 1861. The regiment was among the first Northern volunteer units to reach the capital that spring, after the attack on Fort Sumter and Lincoln's call for troops, when Washington was lightly defended and its safety was uncertain. The photograph was taken by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer, and it is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection. Its record is a useful glimpse of how quickly the city filled with raw volunteers in the war's first months.
