The 7th New York State Militia, one of the first New York regiments to reach Washington after the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, trained at Camp Cameron on the city's northwest edge. The camp was named for Simon Cameron, then Secretary of War, and in those early months the capital was crowded with volunteers who were still learning drill and basic soldiering. The photograph was made by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer who documented many of the Union units that passed through the city during the war's first year.
