The tower stands at the headquarters of the 14th New York Heavy Artillery, a Union regiment serving in the siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia. Signal towers like this one let officers pass messages by flag and lamp across the front, so a single post could link distant units during the 1864-1865 siege. The record gives the date as 1860, which predates the war, so the date likely needs correction. The picture is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, with left and right halves that were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made it.
