This photograph shows Company L of the 2nd New York Artillery at Fort C.F. Smith, one of the Union fortifications ringing Washington in 1861 after the war began. The fort was part of an ambitious network of earthworks and batteries meant to protect the capital from Confederate attack across the Potomac. Commercial photographers in the city, including the War Photograph and Exhibition Company that published this view, sold images like this to a public eager to see the soldiers and defenses behind the news.
