Tenleytown, now a neighborhood in northwest Washington, was a rural crossroads when Union forces ringed the capital with earthworks during the Civil War, and Fort Gaines was one of the defenses built there. The picture shows a detachment of New York Volunteers in 1864, a reminder that regiments from many states were posted around Washington to guard against Confederate attack. It survives as a copy negative on an 8 by 6 inch glass plate, made by the National Photo Company, a firm active in the early twentieth century. The title comes from information the company supplied and has not been independently verified, so the identification of the fort and men should be read with that in mind.
