Company G of the 71st New York Volunteers, a militia regiment from New York City, poses in front of a canvas tent, a setting typical of early camp life. The regiment was among the first New York units to answer President Lincoln's call for troops after the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, and it spent much of that spring and summer in and around Washington. Photographer Mathew Brady, whose studios in Washington and New York made him the best-known documentarian of the war, recorded many such groups during those months. The picture offers a glimpse of volunteers still learning the routines of soldiering before the harder campaigns of later years.
