Few regiments of 1861 carried a county's name as openly as the 35th New York, whose ranks were drawn largely from Jefferson County in the state's north country. This stereograph pair shows the regiment's camp in its early months, when volunteer units were still learning the routines of soldiering and many had not yet seen combat. Because the two glass plates record slightly different viewpoints, a stereoscope would have fused them into a single image with apparent depth, a popular way for people at home to follow the war. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is no longer treated as settled.
