A 12-pounder howitzer taken from Confederate forces by men of the 17th New York and the 12th Maine sits in this view, its captors' regiments named on the original negative sleeve. The scene is set near Hanover Court House in Virginia, where Union troops fought in late May 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign, as the Army of the Potomac advanced toward Richmond. The picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of glass wet-collodion plates that, viewed through a stereoscope, gave the image depth. Photographer James F. Gibson, born in 1828, made it, and the pair stands among the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negatives.
