Guns of the 1st New York Battery sit unlimbered near Richmond in this 1862 view, their wheeled front carriages detached so the crews can ready them to fire. The picture dates from the Peninsular Campaign, when Union forces under George B. McClellan advanced up the peninsula toward the Confederate capital. David B. Woodbury made the image with a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick preparation and development in the field. Its stereograph format produced paired views meant to give the scene a sense of depth.
