Captain Andrew Cowan's battery, the 1st New York Independent Battery Light Artillery, is the subject of this 1865 view taken near Petersburg, Virginia. Independent batteries were small artillery units that could be attached to larger commands, and Petersburg had been under siege for nearly ten months when Confederate forces abandoned the city in April 1865. The wet collodion glass negative was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866, and it is part of a Library of Congress collection of Civil War glass negatives.
