The 20-pounder Parrott rifled guns of the 1st New York Battery stand in the open countryside near Richmond, Virginia, in this 1862 stereograph, made from a wet collodion glass negative. The photograph dates to the Peninsula Campaign, when Union forces under George B. McClellan advanced up the peninsula toward the Confederate capital. Parrott rifles were cast-iron guns reinforced with a wrought-iron band at the breech, and they were common in Union batteries of the period. Because it was made as a stereograph pair, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the guns and the men around them a sense of depth.
