Castle Clinton, the old circular fort at the southern tip of Manhattan, is the focus here, with the word "Aquarium" painted on the building at left. The fort was completed around 1811 and later served as the Castle Garden immigrant landing depot, where millions of arrivals first set foot in the United States before Ellis Island opened in 1892. By the time this view was made, the structure had been reused as the New York Aquarium, which opened there in 1896. The picture shows how the Battery's waterfront mixed public parkland with piers and shipping at the edge of the city.
