Taken in Washington, D.C., in 1863, this picture documents the 17th New York Battery, an artillery unit, through a glass negative made by the wet collodion process. That process demanded that each plate be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, so photographers worked with portable darkrooms close to the scene. The negative was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who worked in the Washington area during the war and died in 1866. Its survival in the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection makes it a useful record of how military units were pictured during the conflict.
