Washington stands on the Wall Street side of the old Sub-Treasury building, the Federal Hall site where he took the oath of office as the first president in 1789. John Quincy Adams Ward's bronze statue, unveiled in 1883, shows him in a formal pose on a granite pedestal, facing the financial district. The building around it was the federal Sub-Treasury, so the statue marked both the nation's first presidential inauguration and the government's presence in the city's financial center.
