Six officers of the 17th New York Battery sit for this 1863 portrait, which the Library of Congress catalogues under the Battle of Gettysburg. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required a plate to be coated, exposed, and developed within minutes, so making a group portrait like this in the field or in camp was a laborious undertaking. Photographers working with Union forces in 1863 often recorded artillery units, whose men served and maintained cannon.
