Taken from the water, this view puts Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan beside the tugboats working the harbor, a reminder of how much of the city's commerce moved by river and bay in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1910, sent photographers across the country to record cities, railways and landscapes for sale as prints and postcards. The Battery, built partly on landfill at the island's end, was a busy gateway for ferries and steamships, so the boats in the foreground reflect the working waterfront that surrounded the park.
