Few pictures on this board capture the hilltop setting as directly as this one. The view shows St. Luke's Hospital on the high ground of Cathedral Heights, above the steep, wooded slopes of Morningside Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Around 1900, the hospital and the surrounding institutions were reshaping this bluff, which was then a fast-changing edge of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company made the image on a large 11 by 20 inch glass negative, a format that suited the wide, landscape-style views the firm sold to the public.
