Between the spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral, a sign reading "Manhattan Storage" marks a warehouse rising behind the church, a reminder of how closely the city's commercial blocks pressed against its landmarks. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style, the cathedral on Fifth Avenue was dedicated in 1879, and its spires were a fixture of the midtown skyline for decades. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century for postcards and publications.
